Niyatam Kuru Karma Tvam
(from Bhagavad Gita – Chapter 3, Verse 8)
नियतं कुरु कर्म त्वं, कर्म ज्यायो ह्यकर्मणः ।
शरीरयात्रापि च ते, न प्रसिद्ध्येदकर्मणः ||
Niyataṃ kuru karma tvaṃ, Karma jyāyo hyakarmaṇaḥ |
Sarīrayātrāpi ca te, Na prasiddhyedakarmaṇaḥ||
Meaning: Perform your duties in daily life. It is far better to act than to be inactive. By being inactive, you cannot even maintain the needs of your physical body.
Extended Meaning: The subhashitam tells us to be active. If we are lazy and sit around all day, then we will not be physically fit. It also stresses the importance of using our time productively. Instead of watching TV or playing computer games, one could go outside and exercise or read a book.
